Leading Yourself

Management is not leading. Management involves planning, organizing, and delegating. Leadership, on the other hand, is influencing.

When I was in the military, I learned about the difference between managing and leading. That difference was very much visible in how soldiers followed. If you have ever heard someone say, “I will follow him through war”, that’s an example of influence. You would notice soldiers following effortlessly toward influence rather than toward the negative approach. One of the experiences of leadership for me came from one particular mission we conducted with a team of guys who all care for each other. A bond that was great and it saved lives.

That experience gave all of us an understanding of what good leaders we were. We watched each other’s back at all cost regardless of gender, race or diversity; all one of the same. A team. All leaders with a sense of sacrifice and dedication.

Just as leadership is required in the military, we must also learn to lead ourselves to influence progress. How are you influencing your own life for the better? Are you truthful to you? Are you listening to the experts that advise you; that help you find leadership in yourself to carry on and make decisions that are best for you?

Understand that it’s not about being hard on yourself. Instead, ask yourself for what you need. Not what you want. Focus on the needs first. That is your life. The true nature of life. As you grow, so will your needs. Remember, don’t limit yourself from a higher need like love, or respect, or being treated exactly to your value(priceless).

The moment you take that from your mind to feeling it in your heart, you will align with it. You will start noticing actions being implemented. Influence a goal and set it. Think about it often as you believe in yourself and your potential. Carry it from the mind into your heart and start falling in love with that goal and you will pursue it effortlessly.

Be committed to yourself and your goals. Have that discipline. Have integrity in that belief that nothing else can deter you from that vision. That feeling of being on the driver’s seat. Leading all the way. What matters the most is what you do behind the scenes, how consistent you are, and with great respect and understanding of who you are. It can be done. It has been done, and people are doing it.
